Press Release: Wellington Chocolate Factory
Free Dating Sites In Papua New Guinea
Fairtrade and Wellington Chocolate Factory (WCF) arelaunching a new, limited edition chocolate bar featuringbeans sourced exclusively from Papua NewGuinea.
With fewer than 200 barsavailable, the chocolate is made from organic, Fairtradebeans grown by the YangoruCocoa Development Project, based in Wewak, in the remotenorthern region of East Sepik province. A collaborativefarming initiative, 529 small scale farmers grow cocoabeans, supporting a community of more than 2600 people. Theco-operative became certified in 2020, and cocoa is theirmain source of income. Like many other small-scale farmers, most of the income from cash crops covers school fees fortheir children.
Virginia Jones from Fairtrade says inreleasing the bar with WCF, they want to bring the best ofPNG to New Zealanders, particularly while travel isrestricted.
'PNG is doing it particularly tough duringCovid-19. Pre-Covid, visitor numbers were increasing everyyear, but with borders closed, they’ve lost over 200million annually with a 82% drop in visitor numbers. We wantto take people on an adventure for the senses and transportthem to an incredible country that is so close to us but isyet so different,' she says.
The Yangoru farmersreceive a Fairtrade premium for their beans, which is overand above the Fairtrade price and goes into a communal fundfor workers and farmers to improve their social, economic, and environmental conditions
Gabe Davidson, theco-founder of WCF, travelled to Bougainville by Vaka(traditional boat) in 2015, bringing PNG beans to Wellingtonto make into their first bar from the region. He describesthe people of PNG as 'super-friendly' and remembers theircrew being greeted by musicians playing traditional musicand dancers.
'It was quite an emotional experiencearriving at Bougainville. The forests and beaches wereuntouched, and people were living in harmony with nature,'he says.
Gabe describes the new limited-edition bar asbeing like biting into a chocolate brownie not long out ofthe oven - delivering a buttery mouthfeel with notes ofvanilla and a hint of rum and raisin.
'South Pacificbeans and Melanesian cocoa beans have interesting flavourcharacteristics, compared to the Forrestero beans on theIvory Coast and in Ghana which grow fast and are farmed atpace,' he says.
'Cocoa trees in PNG are often grownalongside other food and shaded by larger trees, includingthe Canarium Indicum or 'Galip Nut' tree, an indigenous treethat produces the most delicious, sweet nuts in the shape ofgiant almonds'.
Gabe says agricultural exports areimportant to PNG and make up around 25 per cent of thecountry's GDP.
'Traditionally, cocoa has been sold onthe commodity market at a low price; however, with growingdemand for high quality, traceable beans, we are seeingproducers get a better price for their cocoa which improvestheir standard of living. We are delighted to be workingwith Fairtrade to deliver a fairer future for farmers, thecommunities they support and the environment - andcontinuing our relationship with the people of Papua NewGuinea,' he says.
Fairtrade is also releasing a GoodFortune Coffee made with coffee beans farmed in PNG. You canread more about the project here. You can buy the bar exclusively online here.
